Can I get Social Security Disability or SSI for Multiple Sclerosis (MS)? Social Security Disability Applications and Appeals
Multiple Sclerosis is sometimes a disabling medical condition. Many people are able to work with this condition, but many cannot. If you have multiple sclerosis and feel that you are unable to work, you should seek disability attorneys who can help you file a disability application or a disability appeal. Under its five-step sequential evaluation for disability appeals and applications, Social Security will first look to see whether you qualify for benefits under Listing 11.09. Disability applications for multiple sclerosis can automatically be granted when an individual suffers from:
11.09 Multiple sclerosis, characterized by A or B:
A. Disorganization of motor function in two extremities (see 11.00D1), resulting in an extreme limitation
(see 11.00D2) in the ability to stand up from a seated position, balance while standing or walking, or use
the upper extremities.
OR
B. Marked limitation (see 11.00G2) in physical functioning (see 11.00G3a), and in one of the following:
1. Understanding, remembering, or applying information (see 11.00G3b(i)); or
2. Interacting with others (see 11.00G3b(ii)); or
3. Concentrating, persisting, or maintaining pace (see 11.00G3b(iii)); or
4. Adapting or managing oneself (see 11.00G3b(iv)).

If your multiple sclerosis is not as advanced as that noted above, disability attorneys can still help you win your disability appeal or disability application if this condition prevents you from working. As you age, the Social Security disability laws change in your favor. After age 50, multiple sclerosis often results in an award of your disability application or disability appeal so long as you are prevented from performing your past jobs. Before age 50 you must prove that your medical condition prevents you from doing any gainful job.
Disability attorneys often point to the many effects of multiple sclerosis in order to prove your case. Since multiple sclerosis can affect your ability to walk, your ability to use your hands, your memory, your ability to concentrate, your energy level etc… there are many avenues that a disability attorney can pursue as a winning theory of your case. If you are experiencing a variety of multiple sclerosis symptoms, it is a good idea to tell your doctor about all of these symptoms as often as possible so that you will be found more credible when you express these symptoms in court. When proving disability applications for multiple sclerosis, disability attorneys often find that it is some of the less obvious symptoms that end up making or breaking your case. Hence, it is important to tell your doctor about all the effects that you experience from this medical condition as you never know what aspect of your condition could be the difference in being approved or denied for disability.
