What are the steps for proving disability?
In order for an individual to be found disabled, five steps, known as the five-step sequential disability evaluation process, must be proven. Therefore, the following five questions must be asked of the claimant (the individual filing for disability benefits):
- Are you currently working?
- Do you have a severe medical problem that affects your ability to work?
- Does your medical problem meet or equal one of Social Security’s listed impairments?
- Are you able to do any of your past jobs?
- Are there any other jobs out there that you can do?
