Can I get SSD or SSI for a Traumatic Brain Injury?

If you have suffered a traumatic brain injury and find yourself unable to work a full-time job as a result, you may be entitled to Social Security Disability and/or Supplemental Security Income payments.

When someone suffers such an injury, Social Security will look to see how the injury affects the person’s ability to work, both physically and mentally. If your medical records support a finding that you cannot meet the physical and/or mental demands of full-time employment, you should be approved for SSD/SSI. This is especially true where a person’s traumatic brain injury causes such severe physical limitations that they are no longer able to stand up from a seated position, balance when standing or walking, or use their upper extremities or if the person has serious mental limitations as a result. Social Security will look to see whether the mental limitations cause deficits in a number of areas, including understanding, remembering, and applying information, interacting with others appropriately, concentrating, completing tasks effectively, and performing self-care tasks.
